The beginning of his career began when 1991 joined the company Claris, a subsidiary of Apple Computer. There Pierre served as a consumer software engineer. In 1994, he founded Inc. Development Corporation which then experienced and was named eShop. At that time eShop was the leader of internet-based trading software technology. In 1996, the company was acquired by Microsoft.
Ebay was made by Omidyar and officially launched on September 4, 1995 to coincide with labor day.
The word “eBay” was made by Omidyar when he said that his first choice for his website, “Echobay”, was registered. Not wanting to take a second trip to Sacramento, he came with ‘eBay. “The often repeated story that eBay was founded to help trade the fiance of Omidyar’s Pez candy dispenser was made by PR managers in 1997 to attract media interest. It was revealed in Adam Cohen’s 2002 book and confirmed by eBay. The Web auction then changed its name to “eBay”. This service is free at first, but starts charging to cover the costs of internet service providers.
Jeffrey Skoll joined the company in 1996. In March 1998, Meg Whitman was brought in as President and CEO and continued to run the company until January 2008 when he announced his retirement. In September 1998, eBay launched a successful public offering, making both billionaire Omidyar and Skoll. In July 2008, 178 million eBay’s Omidyar’s shares were valued at around $ 44.5 billion. Omidyar is also an investor in Montage Resort & Spa in Laguna Beach, California.
In 2010, Omidyar launched an online news service in Honolulu called Beat Civil which covers civil affairs in Hawaii. Meanwhile, in managing eBay, Omidyar was never separated from good values. He believes that basically humans are good. He believes that everyone has advantages that can be given to others. In addition to running the eBay business, Omidyar treats everyone who is involved as well as possible. Omidyar has a dream that the existing sellers and buyers form a continuous world of online commerce, such as the current development of eBay.
Pierre Omidyar later founded Omidyar Network which is a philanthropic investment company dedicated to exploiting market forces to create opportunities for people to improve their lives.
